Tweets April–June 2009

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 01
Test Tweet. Does this thing work?

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 02
Brandon isn’t sure what to do with himself now that he’s turned in the Wheel of Time Draft.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 02
Brandon is looking at the hundreds of emails he ignored last month while he was working all hours finishing The Gathering Storm.

BrandSanderson Sat Apr 04
Harriet, Alan, and Maria already have edits back to me on some chapters in WOT12. Man, they work fast! (Small things only to fix now.)

BrandSanderson Sat Apr 04
I posted a new blog entry involving some fanart and some reader mail. Find it on my website; or wait for Facebook to auto-update shortly.

BrandSanderson Sat Apr 04
WoT editing fact: Brandon is incapable of using the word ‘cleft’ properly. My mind knows what it means. My fingers are another story.

BrandSanderson Sun Apr 05
Making sure Aes Sedai don’t accidentally violate one of the Oaths is shockingly difficult. You have to be very careful what you write…

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 06
More and more revision notes from Harriet and company flowing in. We’re about halfway done now. Mostly little clarity or continuity tweaks

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 07
For my birthday, my wife bought me popcorn salt. It’s divine. That is all.

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 07
@theKJA You have to look carefully for it at the store. It’s very finely ground salt. Sticks to the popcorn in the most delightful way.

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 07
Ha. Clarification. It’s not my birthday. It was purchased for me on my birthday, back in December. I’m just enjoying it today.

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 07
New Blog Post up on my website and coming to Facebook shortly. (It should auto-import in twenty min or so.)

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 07
More edits from Harriet in today. Now working on page 832 out of 1461. (Double spaced 12pt Courier New.)

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 07
For those who want to compare, Mistborn: The Final Empire was 1057 pages long in the same format. Elantris was 949 pages.

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 07
@RebeccaMoesta I thought something similar myself the day I pulled that all-nighter last week working on the WoT… 😉

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 08
My 17 month old son is running around with a pair of powerful fridge magnets. That reminds me. Perhaps it’s time to backup my computer…

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 08
Newest WoT-related editing challenge: Making certain all of the timelines of the different viewpoints are all coordinated.

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 08
I did a quick count a while back, and came up with 21 separate viewpoints for the book, though several of those only appear once.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 09
This is all kind of awesome: link

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 09
Just signed and personalized 40 hardcovers of my books for those who ordered them. link

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 09
The last two MB:WA annotations have been posted to my website.

BrandSanderson Fri Apr 10
I’m caught up on WoT revisions; still waiting for a dozen or so more chapters worth from Charleston.

BrandSanderson Fri Apr 10
In case you’re curious, The Gathering Storm stands at fifty chapters in length right now, not including prologue or epilogue.

BrandSanderson Fri Apr 10
T-Rex, oh how you make me laugh. link

BrandSanderson Fri Apr 10
Currently listening to as I write: Pan’s Labyrinth soundtrack. Thumbs up.

BrandSanderson Sat Apr 11
Currently Listening to as I work: Pandora set to a George Winston station.

BrandSanderson Sun Apr 12
Easter Dinner will be: Ham & rolls. That’s probably as opposite as possible from what my Jewish friends are eating this week. 😉

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 13
My 18 month old son likes to help Emily do the laundry. He ‘helps’ by sticking random things in. Including, we just found, Emily’s phone.

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 13
Phone is dead. It’s kind of cool. You can actually see water filling up half of the display.

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 13
Getting Revision notes from three people in Charleston. Harriet and Jim’s two assistants. One group is done. Other two are close.

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 14
Maria’s edits entered. Harriet’s last revision notes just came.

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 14
Tor has offered on The Way of Kings. Should be official in the next couple of weeks. Look for an explanation on my website next week.

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 15
Harriet’s last revision notes sent back. I’ll still have to do a few little edits when she gets back to me about my getting back to her.

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 15
New Blog Post: link

BrandSanderson Fri Apr 17
At Jordancon. Loads of fun. I just played ALL of the Forsaken (the males at least) in a skit. Sometimes playing several Forsaken at once.

BrandSanderson Sun Apr 19
Off to judge the WoT costume contest and draw the winners of the charity auction.

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 20
Back from Atlanta. Had a blast. I will post links to photos and/or video when I find them.

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 20
Harriet gave me the last line edit draft at JordanCon. Going through those pages now. Managed to get 500 done at the con. 1000 to go.

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 20
Harriet is very, very good at line editing. On page 700 of 1400 now.

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 20
800/1400 pages of edits done. In answer to a question, in this format 1400 pages is around the length of The Eye of the World or A Crown of Swords

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 20
A quick explanation: Line edits are where Harriet has gone through and tweaked the language of the book, then given me those pages.

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 20
It’s mostly proofreading, with a few larger types of edits. I’m going through entering her changes to the electronic file, fixing as I go.

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 21
Pandora has a desktop gadget? Why have I not been informed of this before now? Huzzah!

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 21
1000/1400 pages done. In every edit, there are sections lacking edits. Was the writing cleaner, or was the editor caught up in the story?

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 21
1100/1400 pages of line edits entered. And time for sleep. Getting close now.

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 21
Doing line edits as Limebaby ‘helps’ Pemberly do dishes. It involves dumping water on the floor & stirring the soapy water with his spoon.

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 21
1200/1400. Harriet emailed me and quipped that the ‘vultures at Tor are circling’ wondering where their manuscript is. Better hurry! 😉

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 21
1300/1400 pages of line edits done. Once done, I’ll have read through this book sixteen times total.

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 21
Warbreaker just got a starred review from PW. Woot! (I’ll explain what starred reviews are on my blog soon for those who don’t know.)

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 21
Okay! Line edits all DONE. Now on to spell-checking the document and looking over the chapter titles and ornaments one last time.

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 22
It’s off. Draft 16 sent to Charleston. Now Tor goes to production. I will get some more chances to tweak, but it’s essentially done.

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 22
Longer post on turning in TGS: link

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 22
Let’s try that link again: link

BrandSanderson Wed May 06
Poor Limebaby is having a screechy day. In other news, we really need to move to a larger house…

BrandSanderson Thu May 07
@stacylwhitman We’ve tried, but it’s been slow going. Maybe now that Peter is working for me, I’ll have more time.

BrandSanderson Thu May 07
In the process of transfering a lot of notes from Word files to Wikidpad. Much better for book notes, but a lot of work to move.

BrandSanderson Fri May 08
New Blog Post (finally) about Way of Kings: link

BrandSanderson Mon May 11
Wall Street Borders has three signed MB3 Hardcovers. Probably some of the last ones in the country. Will vanish soon; the paperback is out.

BrandSanderson Mon May 11
Listening to: First Narnia soundtrack. The movie was all right. The soundtrack, however, is great. (I’m a fan of Harry Gregson-Williams.)

BrandSanderson Tue May 12
Just did a phone interview for AMC’s blog. I’ll let you know when it’s been posted.

BrandSanderson Wed May 13
New blog: link

BrandSanderson Wed May 13
@tobiasbuckell Been meaning to do it ever since you posted that blog entry. Congrats! You deserve it.

BrandSanderson Wed May 13
@tobiasbuckell Though know that I’m annoyed at you for having a name short enough fit on twitter without cutting a letter. 😉

BrandSanderson Wed May 13
@stacylwhitman Grrr. Sure, go ahead and rub it in.

BrandSanderson Wed May 13
@tobiasbuckell I should have used something clever, like Neil does. I was advised to use my full name; now kind of regret that. Ah, well.

BrandSanderson Wed May 13
Listening to as I work on the WoT outline: Daft Punk. (I can’t write to it, generally, but it’s awesome editing/plotting music.)

BrandSanderson Thu May 14
Today’s writing music of choice: Pink Floyd’s Pulse album.

BrandSanderson Thu May 14
Wheel of Time #12 Cover art is up on my website and on Dragonmount. link

BrandSanderson Fri May 15

BrandSanderson Thu May 21
Warbreaker, it appears, got a two-page opening spread in the Science Fiction Book Club mailing this month. Cool!

BrandSanderson Thu May 21
Love this, though the font is tough at first. link

BrandSanderson Sat May 23
Currently Reading: Uglies. Not far into it yet, but the opening is great.

BrandSanderson Sun May 24

BrandSanderson Wed May 27

BrandSanderson Wed Jun 03
Working on TGS line edits one last time. Moshe, my editor at Tor, did a read of the book and sent suggestions. Last revision due next week.

BrandSanderson Wed Jun 03
With this last revision, TGS went through seventeen drafts. For comparison, the Mistborn books each went through seven or eight.

BrandSanderson Wed Jun 03
@howardtayler Got it. I will probably still go right now. See you Friday.

BrandSanderson Thu Jun 04
How you know you’re a parent. Getting a new book contract: ! Getting 19 month old toddler to eat carrots by putting dressing on them: !!!!!!

BrandSanderson Thu Jun 04
More TGS line edits. I have managed to get the different Sea Folk ships mixed up. (whoops.)

BrandSanderson Thu Jun 04
Put an offer in on a house up in American Fork (Just north of where we live now) but someone else offered the same day for a tad more. Grr.

BrandSanderson Fri Jun 05
Mistborn poster proofs are here. Looks real sharp!

BrandSanderson Fri Jun 05
Moshe hates it when I use “Smelt” instead of “Smelled.” But Webster says both are all right…

BrandSanderson Sat Jun 06
For those wondering about the great smelt/smelled argument of 09, I found an instance of Robert Jordan using Smelt in this context. EOTW: 30

BrandSanderson Sat Jun 06
17.0 of The Gathering Storm just sent to Charleston. I kept smelt for now, though might change it. Still have until Thursday next week.

BrandSanderson Sat Jun 06
Driving to Sam Weller’s now to personalize/number books. Today’s your last chance to get one. Call by 3:00 MST. link

My Agent is reading The Gathering Storm and chatting with me about it. The funny thing is that this is the first WoT book he’s ever read…

BrandSanderson Fri Jun 12
Needless to say, my agent is rather confused and overwhelmed. I suggested he go back to EoTW, and he says he might. If he has time.

BrandSanderson Sun Jun 14
If you missed it, I did another Border’s Blog item: link

BrandSanderson Thu Jun 18
@rocketroadtrip Keep at it and good luck!

BrandSanderson Thu Jun 18
In rewriting The Way of Kings yesterday, I discovered I’d had the characters do a very dumb thing at a very important climax. Urg. More work.

BrandSanderson Tue Jun 23
@rocketroadtrip Don’t worry, she’s not his type. Far too capable and not nearly frivolous enough. 😉

BrandSanderson Tue Jun 23
@rocketroadtrip Congrats on the book finish!

BrandSanderson Wed Jun 24
My pet bird ran across the keyboard, leaving an unexpeted ‘word’ typed in the middle of the Wheel of Time…

BrandSanderson Thu Jun 25
@tobiasbuckell You post as I sit working on the book itself. Lately, I’m not sure what is more intimidating—the WoT or this deal’s press…

BrandSanderson Thu Jun 25
@tobiasbuckell For me, the next years are all going in the bank. I think a lot of people don’t realize how many ups and downs our job has.

BrandSanderson Thu Jun 25
@tobiasbuckell My goal for 2009–2013 is to save enough to keep me doing what I love for the rest of my life, even if sales turn down.

BrandSanderson Thu Jun 25
@tobiasbuckell Heh. The job you worked at to support your writing addiction? I had one of those…

BrandSanderson Thu Jun 25
5 years at $7 an hour working a graveyard shift for me. Trick is, I didn’t have a family, so I didn’t get into debt and could quit easier.

BrandSanderson Thu Jun 25
Heh. That last one is @tobiasbuckell if anyone is confused.

BrandSanderson Thu Jun 25
Honest to goodness, I dreamed that Rowling asked me to finish Harry Potter for her. I turned her down b/c I was too busy with the WoT.

BrandSanderson Thu Jun 25
People aren’t hating Scalzi cleverly enough. We must do something! link #scalzilovehate

BrandSanderson Thu Jun 25
Remember to keep your #scalzilovehate posts respectful, folks. Bizarre=good. Actual hate=bad. link

BrandSanderson Fri Jun 26
A very good Writer Beware post today: link

BrandSanderson Fri Jun 26
I find it takes about twice as long to write a clever scene as it does an emotional one. Does that mean I’m half as witty as I am dramatic?

BrandSanderson Fri Jun 26
Wow: link (Look at the middle of the page.)

BrandSanderson Mon Jun 29
New episode of Writing Excuses! link It’s on dealing with criticism.

BrandSanderson Mon Jun 29
SFWA is raising the lifetime membership dues from $700 to $3000. Just went ahead and bought mine. I’ve put it off too long.

BrandSanderson Mon Jun 29
RT: @sfwa @BrandSanderson That is not at all official. It’s one of the numbers we’ve talked about but the board has made no decisions.

BrandSanderson Mon Jun 29
Revision: SFWA lifetime cost MAY rise. (Website told me 3k, but sfwa only charged me $700 when I asked, so I guess the site had a typo?)
