e_claire1 Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson just got vol13 . . . Is there another?

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@e_claire1 One more. I'm working on it now. Out next year.

josephWDye Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson just wondering, do you have any magic underwear ?

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@josephWDye You do realize that what you just asked is somewhat akin to walking up to a Muslim and calling him a towelhead, don't you?

jasonmsteele Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson Being a fan of your work doesn't mean that someone shouldn't call out nonsense when they see or hear it.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele I'm not sure what you're replying to, exactly.

jasonmsteele Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson Sorry, I was responding to your reply to @josephWDye where you compared his question to calling a muslim a towelhead.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele Asking, or challenging someone about their beliefs is a good thing to do. Ridiculing them is not.

jasonmsteele Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson Where calling a muslim a towelhead is more of a racist/cultural insult, what @josephWDye said addresses a nonsense belief

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele Wearing a symbol of my faith is no more a nonsense belief than a Muslim wearing head gear or a Catholic wearing a cross.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele The simile is exactly the same.

jasonmsteele Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson I disagree. A keffiyeh or cross isn't understood to be magical in the way that the mormon undergarments are. Catholics believing that crackers and wine actually turn into flesh and blood would be similar, and also worthy of ridicule.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele There is nothing magical about them. They are a symbol of faith. Faith may be a protection, true.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele Some may regard the garments as having innate protection, but some also believe a cross or Bible does.

jasonmsteele Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson Some beliefs are so ridiculous that ridicule is the only appropriate response. And it's often effective.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele Ridicule is an inferior way of dealing with these issues, as it will polarize and demean. Logic and common ground serve better

jasonmsteele Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson I used to think that as well, but people of 'faith' don't hold their beliefs because of logic and evidence, and so it is next to impossible to demonstrate to them via those avenues that what they believe is false . . .

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele Many do not. There are some who do, however. And I think faith should be founded in experience and evidence.

jasonmsteele Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson Then it wouldn't be faith, it would just be belief. Faith is belief in a proposition in the absense of evidence or in the face of contradictory evidence.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele Well, your definition of faith is certainly one. However, I see it more as trusting in something that has been proven to you.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele If my father says, "I will come through for you on such and such" & I trust him because he's proven in the past, that is faith

jasonmsteele Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson You're conflating the term 'faith' here. I'm sure you don't have to be told that a word can have more than one meaning. The meaning here equates to 'a reasonable expectation based on experience' That's not the same as religious faith.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele I am aware of the different definitions. I was trying to define my definition, not say a blanket definition.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele My definition of religious faith, for myself, is exactly what you said. An expectation based on experience.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele As a member of the LDS faith, who has had ample proof given to me of God's existence—the only logical way I could believe—

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele I find it important to search for the real truths and to understand people who disagree with me, to see if I am wrong.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele I will not go so far as to say that there is never reason for ridicule, however, as I was able to think of a few exceptions.

jasonmsteele Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson Ridicule can be effective in demonstrating just how absurd the belief system is from outside . . . just as all other religions are to the believer. As Heinlein said, "One man's religion is another man's belly laugh."

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele Proper ridicule could be appropriate, couched in a form of "Look, can you see how silly this sounds to the outsider?"

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele However, walking up to someone and saying "You are an idiot, and this is stupid" is hardly a good way to begin a dialogue.

jasonmsteele Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson Well, I just don't think that I owe much politeness to people who don't care in the least for logic and evidence, and are doing their level best to retard science education, repeal social advancements, and who look forward to the destruction of the majority of mankind with anticipation.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele The greatest changes to good people are made through empathy and an attempt to understand.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele We must continue to be polite and strive for common ground. The biggest problem with our discourse these days is—

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele —the justification where people on any side say "I no longer need to be a civil human being to these people because of X."

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele Also, if I vanish, it's because I am landing and lose internet—not because I'm ignoring you. We could lose it at any moment.

jasonmsteele Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson Come on Brandon. I think that the biggest problem with discourse today is that faith gets a free pass. If someone tells you that he believes something on faith, then he thinks that that is unassailable, and I don't agree.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele If you let your disagreements turn you into hatred and incivility, you become that which you hate, my friend.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele (Sorry to go Yoda on you. That last bit was on the heavy-handed side. )

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele Some of the people you speak of are worthy of your contempt. Most are just . . . well, people.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele The answer to your problems is teaching them to see the other. You cannot do that unless you can do it yourself

jasonmsteele Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson I think we're both better than sound-byte platitudes. What I hate is people who enshrine bigotry and ignorance behind a shield of 'faith,' while working to destroy everything that the enlightenment has gifted us with.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele Faith deserves to be challenged more than it does, and we should not be able to stand behind it as an iron wall.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele I just simply believe that we all need to see one another more as human beings.

jasonmsteele Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson Anyhow, good talking to you, even if it is a real pain to do so in these tiny twitter chunks.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele Nice chatting with you too. Again, sorry for the Yoda. You have good arguments. But I think you're giving in to a simplistic—

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele —view of "Us against them" where "Them" are always trying to destroy everything that is good or virtuous.

jasonmsteele Thu Apr 14
@BrandSanderson Oh, and welcome to Atlanta (where I happen to live)

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
@jasonmsteele Thanks! And thank you for reading. I'll do my best to enjoy Atlanta.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 14
Okay, we're landing. Signing off from twitter, folks, and see you at Jordancon! I have Magic cards. :)

BrandSanderson Fri Apr 15
I never expected to see a Hambo (from Alcatraz) cosplay . . . http://twitpic.com/4l8lga

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 18
Had some epic magic games at #Jordancon. Many thanks to those who found the time to play me. I lost some, but beat @dragonmount twice. :)

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 20
The Stormlight Archive name auction winner is revealed. Also, T-Shirts + Updates. http://t.co/ntVPcAP

BrandSanderson Sun Apr 24
Writing Excuses is nominated for a Hugo Award for best related work! Woot! Thanks, everyone. Full list here: http://bit.ly/h6urNy

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 25
Daes Dae'mar in the wot always made me idly ponder a magic system where influence points between people were tracked magically. #wotrr

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 25
(I think Westerfeld did something similar in the last Uglies book, which I haven't managed to find time to read yet.)

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 25
Hey, Writing Excuses listeners. We're putting up a page of our best episodes from Season 4 (last year) for Hugo voters to hear. Suggestions?

Andrew_J_Parker Mon Apr 25
@BrandSanderson Can you settle a debate? Will Rand's soul be the Light's champion in every Age, or could it ever be someone else?

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 25
@Andrew_J_Parker I believe that Ishy implies in the books he and Lews Therin have fought thousands of times.

BrandSanderson Mon Apr 25
@Andrew_J_Parker So at least one major character seems to believe it's always Rand. Whether he's right or not is another question.

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 26
Something fun for the #wotrr: Watch Fain. Many of you know this, but it wasn't something I saw until I started reading about the wot. (more)

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 26
Where Fain goes, people start getting paranoid, & you can trace his taint on individuals through the books by how paranoid they get. #wotrr

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 26
Yay! I have two books nominated for the Gemmell award again this year, the award I've lost more times than any other human being. :)

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 26
Note: I'm honored at the nominations. I just find it amusing that somehow, I've managed to lose the award more times than it's been offered.

MarijanJett Tue Apr 26
@BrandSanderson What series was your fav to write? ;-p

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 26
@MarijanJett Hard to say. They are all fun in their own way. The Way of Kings is probably my favorite right now.

RichardFife Tue Apr 26
@BrandSanderson does Scalzi have anything nominated?

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 26
@RichardFife Ha. No, thank goodness, he doesn't. It's a fantasy award.

heridfan Tue Apr 26
@BrandSanderson # wotrr do you mean people in immediate contact with Fain like Elaida or even people in the same town?

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 26
@heridfan I'm mostly talking about Elaida and others who came in direct contact in this case.

redwall_hp Tue Apr 26
@BrandSanderson I finally got around to reading The Way of Kings. It was amazing. Do you have a vague ETA for book two yet? :)

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 26
@redwall_hp Next year, hopefully.

MarijanJett Tue Apr 26
@BrandSanderson My hubby turned me on to you . . . and thank you for responding . . . and congrats on the nomination! ;-)

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 26
@MarijanJett Thank you, and thank you for reading. :)

heridfan Tue Apr 26
@BrandSanderson #wotrr Dragonmount has cracked Taim's secret identity. Taim is Moridin's son!!! will you admit it?

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 26
@heridfan I'd like to read that thread. Will you link it for me?

heridfan Tue Apr 26
@BrandSanderson Here it is http://bit.ly/ep6YgF I just thought you might find it amusing.

RandyWord Tue Apr 26
@BrandSanderson how did those old magic cards work out for you?

BrandSanderson Tue Apr 26
@RandyWord Awesomely, thank you so much.

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 27
Going to Penguicon in the Detroit area this weekend. Here's my schedule. http://t.co/uU4eNAL

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 27
WoT update: I've been doing more writing than reading lately, but keep running into walls. Tossed a few scenes. I'll work it out eventually.

jrr1234 Wed Apr 27
@BrandSanderson Is there a chance to get a book signed this weekend? The Marriott is only .1 mile from my work at the Troy Public Library

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 27
@jrr1234 Happy to sign a book for you if you want to drop by. The con should have signings.

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 27
@jrr1234 If you don't want to attend the Con itself, we could try to work out something with me meeting you in the lobby.

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 27
@jrr1234 But it's going to be tough; I may not be easy to get ahold of via Twitter, as I'll be running about doing con things.

MarijanJett Wed Apr 27
@BrandSanderson Our fantasy girls book club on GoodReads will begin reading Mistborn together . . . it better be good! JK! ;-p

BrandSanderson Wed Apr 27
@MarijanJett Cool! Thanks for picking it.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 28
Howard, Peter, and I are on our way to the Detroit area for Penguicon. I beat Howard to the plane. A bootshine slowed him.

BrandSanderson Thu Apr 28
Arrived, and my handler for the weekend handed me a sack of Magic cards. I can already tell this is going to be an awesome con. #penguicon

BrandSanderson Fri Apr 29
Opening ceremonies at #Pcon. Howard is singing on stage.

BrandSanderson Sat Apr 30
Quote from @JimcHines on our panel. "That series didn't just jump the shark, it is trying to jump the sharktopus." #pcon

BrandSanderson Sat Apr 30
Okay. He just topped it. "That was a LEGITIMATE flatulence reference." #Pcon

BrandSanderson Sat Apr 30
I will be playing magic in the gaming room tonight for the next few hours. Stop by! #pcon

BrandSanderson Sat Apr 30

BrandSanderson Sat Apr 30

BrandSanderson Sun May 01
Many thanks to @tsaot for the ride to (and company at) church today. :)

BrandSanderson Tue May 03
Limeboy (3yrs old) with a bowl: "Daddy, I'm making pretend food." Me: "Can you make some ice cream?" Him: "Sorry. I don't have any mice."

ChaseEmory Tue May 03
@BrandSanderson so I read through all of mistborn, and I still don't get the mistborn llama??

BrandSanderson Tue May 03
@ChaseEmory Old inside joke of my writing group.

BrandSanderson Tue May 03
Voting is open for the David Gemmell Legend Award final ballot of 6, with both THE WAY OF KINGS and TOWERS OF MIDNIGHT http://ning.it/izbFf8

BrandSanderson Tue May 03
Does anyone out there work for Delta Airlines (specifically in an area that deals with skymiles?) If so, email/tweet me. I need some help. [Editor's note: This has been resolved, so no further help is needed. Thanks!]

BrandSanderson Tue May 03
Annotations and store not working on my website (and I can't post new blog entries) right now. We know about it and will fix within a week.

BrandSanderson Tue May 03
You can guess at store and annotation pages by changing the number in e.g. http://brandonsanderson.com/store/item/5/ or /annotation/429/

BrandSanderson Wed May 04
Work for Delta Airlines and want me to owe you a favor? Read this blog post. http://t.co/CxhZJzy

BrandSanderson Thu May 05
The Delta situation has been mostly fixed, thanks to some helpful folks. It isn't exactly what I wanted, but it will work. Thanks, all!

BrandSanderson Thu May 05
Baby Meatloaf has been crying all night. Figuring out why is like debugging a computer. "Does a bottle work? Nope. Oragel? Nope . . . "

BrandSanderson Thu May 05
Awesome comic: (Warning, involves me.) Click on the image for an extra goodie. Thanks @NateTheComicGuy! http://bit.ly/kU0Zzm

aazizorg Thu May 05
@BrandSanderson So do the Heralds have the ability to travel through . . . thyme?

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
@aazizorg That . . . that was . . . that was special, Azi. Thanks for that.

BrandSanderson Thu May 05
So, Producer Jordo (my brother) is at a conference that is holding a contest to see who can get the most likes on a photo. It's a little annoying, since you have to 'like' the conference first, then scroll down to Jordo's picture and 'like' it too. So if this isn't up your alley, ignore away. I can understand not wanting to like random things on Facebook. (As an aside, I've always hated the 'like' terminology they use. Something about it itches at me.) However, if you want to show him a little thanks for all the work he does on my website and Writing Excuses, feel free to go click. It will be fun to see one guy's random photo suddenly spike in their contest and throw off the curve by a huge range. (Irony: I personally can't 'like' it because I have too many friends, and Facebook won't let me.) Also, I promise my next tweets will not involve begging you for things. Link to the conference: http://on.fb.me/mFY0ij. Direct link to Jordo's picture (which is of one of Dan's books): http://on.fb.me/iCMHOV [Editor's note: The contest is over, and Jordo won.]

From Ta'veren Tees: 1 day left to take advantage of $5 off orders of $40 or more! Use Coupon 5offof40 at checkout http://tinyurl.com/taveren

BrandSanderson Thu May 05
Note that I have a few percentage points to add to the progress bars on my website; we have to wait for the site to be fixed first, though.

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
I have some fun things I'll be posting to the website tomorrow. Just a some little goodies, but hopefully interesting ones.

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
And yes, the website is (mostly) back up and running. We got too much traffic, and had to move to a new hosting dealy.

TinnaMarrie Fri May 06
hearing the pharse "Golden Eyes" makes me think of Perrin not Twilight @Kimyasan @BrandSanderson

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
@TinnaMarrie :)

Musingsby Thu May 05
I'm confused @BrandSanderson. Amazon tells me that your new book was published May 1st. Dragonsteel. Never heard of it. http://t.co/p4BkOmQ

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
@Musingsby Yeah, we're confused by that too. Dragonsteel has never been published; it was my undergraduate thesis.

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
@Musingsby There are no plans to publish it, or a version of it, in the near future.

mathachew Thu May 05
@BrandSanderson I humbly offer my professional PHP expertise to my favorite author. You've treated me with your writing, it's only fair!

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
@mathachew Ha. It's okay; it's just that my brother happens to be at a conference this week, the week we needed to end up moving the site.

mindybadgley Thu May 05
@BrandSanderson be careful of orajel. Not sure how old Baby Meatloaf , but just FYI. http://t.co/V8GCDOL

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
@mindybadgley He's 16 months. Thanks for the link. Nice to know.

heridfan Thu May 05
@BrandSanderson please do tell how many percentage points were added! Are you still doing #wotrr?

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
@heridfan Yes, but slowly, as I've gotten sucked into writing a few scenes. I'll bounce back and forth.

Collett19 Thu May 05
@BrandSanderson Just finished The Way of Kings. Bloody brilliant. Can't wait for the next one. Need to re-read Wheel of Time to keep me busy

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
@Collett19 Many thanks!

Patrick1389 Thu May 05
@BrandSanderson delta issue. Are you still needing someone to help?

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
@Patrick1389 I got it mostly fixed. Not perfect. But mostly. Ended up dumping my direct flight for one with layovers.

bigGIANTcircles Thu May 05
@BrandSanderson I haven't even reached where you pick up #WoT but based on the positive hype of your work I picked up #Mistborn yesterday :)

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
@bigGIANTcircles Thanks! Hope you enjoy it.

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
Here's a "thank you" bonus for putting up with my requests this week: more of my short "I Hate Dragons." http://t.co/Nmk22ED

Collett19 Fri May 06
@BrandSanderson Is there anywhere I can read/listen about how you write? And how you started?

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
@Collett19 Well, I do talk about it on Writing Excuses a lot. If you look through the archives, there are some podcasts on those topics.

BrandSanderson Fri May 06
@Collett19 You may need to dig a little, though.

BrandSanderson Sun May 08
I stole Dashner from @johncleaver and his table to sit by me. I don't feel guilty.

BrandSanderson Sun May 08
Hey. I won a Whitney Award! (LDS writer awards.) Sweet!

BrandSanderson Sun May 08
Mother's day program in church had children singing songs about mothers. Except Limeboy, who stood among them & sang the Cars theme instead.

BrandSanderson Mon May 09
New blog post up about David Gemmell Legend Award nominations & more. http://t.co/G7gI4s9

BrandSanderson Fri May 13
Hey. We're doing some Writing Excuses episodes, and want to do a Q&A with listeners. Do you guys have any writing questions for us?

BrandSanderson Fri May 13
Excellent. Thanks for the questions, guys. Did two podcasts from them. One will run in June, the other probably in July.

BrandSanderson Mon May 16
Just wrote the wind scene for #AMoL.

eshaan_koshal Mon May 16
@BrandSanderson How long do we need to wait for the book? :D

BrandSanderson Mon May 16
@eshaan_koshal Next year sometime.

kingnewbs Mon May 16
I knew you would ruin it! There are NO fart jokes in WoT, buddy! RT @BrandSanderson "Just wrote the wind scene for #AMoL"

BrandSanderson Mon May 16
@kingnewbs Lol.

BrandSanderson Mon May 16
To those asking, I'm not going to tell you where the wind rose, folks. It's the very last of them. I can't spoil something like that. #AMoL

shillstr Mon May 16
@BrandSanderson I am loving my #WoK Kaladin's story re-read. Absolutely brilliant writing, makes me excited for #2.

BrandSanderson Mon May 16
@shillstr Many thanks!

BrandSanderson Mon May 16
Slowly working through some things on #AMoL. There are some tough things I need to get right, though I can't say more.

BrandSanderson Mon May 16
InkWing.com is having a contest for Mistborn Allomantic Table T-shirts. http://bit.ly/j0TWe1

BrandSanderson Tue May 17
John @Scalzi is signing in Salt Lake tomorrow. If you're in town, show him some love. (Just not too much, since he's my nemesis and all.)

BrandSanderson Tue May 17
My assistant took pictures of the Way of Kings paperbacks that arrived. http://twitpic.com/4z08bn

BrandSanderson Tue May 17
Also pictures of German Way of Kings, Portuguese Alcatraz 2, and French Elantris. http://twitpic.com/4z08sh

BrandSanderson Tue May 17
The @scalzi Signing is at Sam Weller's from 6-8 Wednesday. I'll be showing up to get his new book. Should be a fun time.

BrandSanderson Tue May 17
Also: Percentage meter on my website is still down. Just tried to update AMOL and blanked things. We're at about 5%, though.

BrandSanderson Wed May 18
My assistant took this picture of a test Sha'rah board game that Martin Mittner sent in. http://twitpic.com/4zb6dd

BrandSanderson Thu May 19
A little bit of a late reminder: Scalzi is signing right now at Sam Weller's. I'm heading up myself.

BrandSanderson Thu May 19
So, today I spelled inconvenience so poorly the spell checker tried to change it to incontinence. Almost didn't catch it . . .

BrandSanderson Thu May 19
Other fun ones: obstinance/abstinence and wiped/whipped. Those would certainly have changed the tone of the scene . . .
